In Memoriam: Marin Mazzie

On September 13, Broadway has lost a dearly beloved legendary icon, but the constellation in the sky has gained a luminous star. We were blessed to know her as the Broadway Legend Marin Mazzie. Mazzie was a three-time Tony Award nominee for her performances as Clara in Passion (1994), Mother in Ragtime (1998), and Lili Vanessi / Katherine in Kiss Me, Kate (2000). Further along in her career, Mazzie was more than brilliant in taking over the role of Dianna Goodman in Kitt and Yorkey’s Next to Normal (2008), giving a new life to Margaret White in a reworked version of Carrie (2012), and assuming the role of Anna Leonowens from Kelli O’Hara in The King and I (2015).

Mazzie fought a battle with ovarian cancer since 2015 but still proceeded to take on roles and went on concerts with her husband, fellow actor Jason Danieley – all the while spreading words about ovarian cancer awareness. Even though Marin Mazzie is not here with us anymore, her legacy stays with us like a handprint on our hearts. To commemorate Marin Mazzie’s incredible legacy in the Broadway community, we’ve picked some of our favorite performances of hers that have touched our souls and which we will hold dear in our hearts.
